Baroque Period Jewel Encrusted Cabinet on Stand
In 1992 our firm was asked by the owner of this object to design and carry out the extensive treatment of a Baroque period jewel encrusted Pietra Dura panel, silver and gilt bronze mounted inlaid tortoise shell and ebony cabinet on stand Antweb Ca. 1647 that was presented in honor of Prince Frederick Hendrik’s naval victory on the Slaak against the Spanish fleet. This object was reportedly purchased at auction from the contents of an embassy and remained in a home, where within time, pieces fell off the object. These pieces were carefully retained and placed on some 50 paper plates and envelopes to be readhered once their original location could be determined. This project took over two years to complete and required in access of 2000 hours as well as the expertise of conservation professionals, curators, historians, gemologists, and goldsmiths. The black and white image on the left depict the state of this beautiful cabinet in the 1930’s before it was sold at auction. The other images below show before treatment was initiated as well as after the treatment was completed. |
